We had a wonderful group of students engage in our classical architecture workshop. Participants attended a presentation, sketched their own designs, and learned how to create their designs in a digital software.

HIGHLIGHT:
Norma Merrick Sklarek made history as the first African-American woman to become a licensed architect in 1954. With sexism and racism being highly prevalent in the field, she persevered, overcoming rejection from nineteen architecture firms before securing her first job. Her groundbreaking career consisted of involvement in major projects, including the Mall of America, schools, and airport terminals, leaving a lasting impact on the architectural landscape.
In 1962, Norma became the first black woman to be licensed as an architect in the State of California. She co-founded what was the largest woman-owned architectural firm at the time, creating opportunities for women and minority architects.
Throughout her career, Norma served in various leadership roles, holding board positions, and contributing to several committees. She shared her expertise by directing architecture guilds and institutes, inspiring many along the way. Even after her retirement, Norma remained a powerful advocate and mentor, dedicating her time to empowering women and minority architects. Her legacy continues to inspire and shape the future of architecture. (Morton, n.d.)

March is all about celebrating the incredible women who've shaped architecture. Let's shine a spotlight on them and celebrate their creativity, resilience, and incredible contributions to the built world.
